Educate To Liberate Print

100% OF PROFITS DONATED. This print is inspired by the Polynesian Panthers in the 1960’s and 1970’s, who fought against racism against Pasifika peoples in Aotearoa/New Zealand (who were inspired by the Black Panthers of Oakland, CA). They fought to end racism, protect Pasifika populations against racist policing and profiling, provide legal aid, and to encourage liberation via education. The Polynesian Panthers saw our Pasifika peoples being left out of the conversation of higher education, treated as if being a blue collar, second-rate citizen was their only purpose to serve to New Zealand society. By setting up homework centers and offering educational resources, they fought to bring Pasifika peoples into the world of higher education, in order to liberate themselves from the systemic racism working against them. As Melani Anae said, the Polynesian Panthers “reinforced the value and importance of education as the tool that will lead us out of oppression and darkness and into the light”. In honor of the Polynesian Panthers, I will be donating 100% of profits from the sales of this print to South Pacific Islander Organization, a non-profit that helps Pasifika students pursue higher education. Through grants, educational summits, resources for scholarships, and more they are working to bring Pasifika representation into higher education and STEM. Donations will be ongoing.

This print includes motifs from various Pacific Islands, including Maori, as the Polynesian Panthers were on the forefront of Pasifika peoples standing together as one. They were a pan-pacific movement that worked together to fight racism. This print is printed from hand carved printing blocks, and each one is printed individually by hand in my home studio. This print is handprinted on 100% cotton 90lb/250gsm acid free Stonehenge white paper using traditional black and brown block printing ink, measuring 9x12in.
